Eligibility for Disability Benefits:

  • You must be under 65, have enough work credits, and have a qualifying condition.
  • The condition must prevent or be expected to prevent you from substantial gainful activity for at least 12 months or be expected to result in death.

Work Credits:

  • Earned through paying Social Security taxes via a qualified employer.
  • Maximum of four credits per year, based on annual earnings.
  • The required number of credits depends on your age at the time of  onset of your disability.

Qualifying Conditions:

  • Includes physical, sensory, mental, intellectual disabilities, and chronic neurological conditions.
  • Must prevent substantial gainful activity for at least 12 months. The SSA determines the exact earnings threshold for substantial gainful activity each year.

Children with disabilities or who are blind may also receive SSI.

  • Funding: SSI is funded by general U.S. Treasury funds, not Social Security taxes.
  • Medical Assistance: Most states offer Medicaid to SSI recipients.
  • Supplemental Payments: Some states provide additional payments to SSI recipients.
  • Food Assistance: SSI recipients may also qualify for food assistance, like SNAP benefits.
  • Payment Schedule: SSI is paid on the first of the month.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen/national or a qualifying noncitizen.
